Hammerstrike is the first spell you get, being unlocked as soon as you build the Wizard's Tower. While being a very strong spell early on it doesn't level very well and is quickly outmatched in terms of power by the other offensive spells. It is however the strongest instant spell to use against buildings until you get to bladestorm.
All in all, Hammerstrike is the go-to spell for a long time. It's easy to use and a lot of fun. Even though it is eventually set aside by most players, it should be upgraded until then.
Cooldown: With only 7 seconds to recharge, Hammerstrike can be used more often than any other spell in the game.
Damage: Unlike other offensive spells, Hammerstrike rarely kills or destroys anything all by itself.
Surpassed: When a player gets to Bladestorm, Hammerstrike is often quickly replaced.
Since Hammerstrike is useful against everything and has a low cooldown, it can and should be used often. Timing is a little less important with this spell since it doesn't take as long until it's ready again.
Its range prevents Hammerstrike from being used at a distance, but it's still possible to maximize its effect with the right positioning. It's possible to damage two or three adjacent barricades or blockages when the spell is used at the point where they touch. Its also possible to damage a blockage and the tower right behind, or several towers at once.
